Having no formal art education (and a science degree from Indiana University,) Kathy "dropped out" in the late nineties to start her own photography business. She attributes her keen eye for design, balance, light and shadow to studying photography during those years. In late 2010, while beginning to pursue oil painting she stated: "If there was such a thing as a "replay" button, I would have spent all my time at I.U. in the Fine Arts Building, but I'm thankful for finding my passion in my fifties, rather than my eighties."
Kathy is closer to perfecting her style by studying with some of the great contemporary artists and she also finds inspiration in many of the late greats, including: Valentin Serov, Nicolai Fechin, Berthe Morisot, Lucy Hartrath, John Singer Sargent, T.C. Steele, Edouard Vuillard, Edgar Payne, Tom Thomson, Edward Willis Redfield, and Frederick Mulhaupt.
A childhood spent camping, boating, water skiing, biking, hiking and horseback riding gives Kathy a love of the outdoors. During 2011, after briefly dabbling in figurative work, she began her studies in plein air, and she hasn't stopped interpreting Mother Nature's splendor since. Her style is a very energetic alla prima, and she prefers to finish her pieces "in one go," or all at once.
Kathy hopes when viewing her work you may experience some of the spirituality she so often finds in nature.
