Neil Sherman, Grand Marais, MN

What I strive to capture in my paintings is the feeling of a particular day. Those days may
never be repeated again, so capturing the essence is important so that people who have known
those days and hours can remember and others who have not known can be transported there
via the painting.

My particular method of painting has roots that date back to the Impressionist ere.
American painter Frank Vincent DuMond studied painting in France in the late 1890’s and early
1900’s and then taught painting at the Arts Students League in New York City. He developed a
palette that has become affectionately known as the “prismatic palette“ which is geared toward
allowing subtle control of color and value in a landscape. This palette has been passed down
through such painters as Arthur Maynard, John Phillip Osborne and Joe Paquet, who in turn
taught it to me.

A majority of my works are painted on location and, if needed, are “tweaked” back in the
studio. Tweaking involves making adjustments to different aspects of the painting such as color,
value, shape, tone etc. or adding small elements that further engage the viewer beyond the
initial impact of the painting.

Neil Sherman is primarily a plein air artist who grew up in Rochester, MN. Sherman graduated from St. John’s University in
1992 and during his time there was influenced by Artist in Residence Mike Lynch. Neil spent a number of years in northern
Minnesota paddling through the BWCAW and Canadian wilderness before moving to Minneapolis to study landscape painting with Joe
Paquet in 1997. He spent 2 years at the Minnesota River School of Fine Art and 5 years at the Hurinenko and Paquet Studio,
fine tuning the craft of outdoor painting. Before moving to Grand Marais in 2005, Sherman received a John Stobart Foundation
grant and spent a month and a half painting in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont. Neil has received numerous awards and
honors for his painting include awards from the Salmagundi Club in New York City and the Salon International Exhibit at
Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, Texas.
