Scott Fraser - Longmont, CO

I consider myself a realist painter, someone who works from direct observation. I gravitated to the still life genre many years ago because of the narrative possibilities it offered - since I am a very object oriented person. It is this narrative that allows me to express myself and defines who I am as a painter. Of equal importance to the overall composition is the surface quality of my work. It is the combination of these two elements that brings the viewer in, first from a distance, then forward for closer scrutiny. Many adjectives have been used to describe my work: quirky, intense, humorous, personal, surreal. Of these, personal best defines what I am after. Often ideas come to me out of experiences I have lived and felt. Art history, nature, friends, family and former teachers - all these provide inspiration and material for my paintings. Anything is fair game as far as subject matter goes. Using a modern sensibility, my goal is to combine common place things in unexpected ways, creating the kind of art that lingers in the viewer s mind.
