Billy Schenck

Known as a pioneer of the Western Pop art movement, Billy Schenck is a legend in the contemporary Western art genre. A painter, printmaker, and photographer since the 1960s, Schenck has captivated collectors, artists, art historians, gallerists, and art audiences alike with his colorful paintings and serigraphs created in his signature hard-edge, paint-by-numbers style. His prolific body of work encompasses a range of Western subjects, including traditional landscapes and nostalgic figurative works featuring cowboys, cowgirls, and Indigenous people, as well as Pop Art caption paintings, surreal photographs, and both humorous musings and satirical rants about Western stereotypes and the current state of art. Incorporating Photorealism’s use of the camera to flatten and reduce a composition to its essence, Post-modernism’s reliance on historic appropriation, cinematic imagery inspired by the films of Italian director Sergio Leone, and his photographs and experiences as a working cowboy, Schenck takes those sources and inspirations to new levels of artistic awareness.

Schenck’s art is part of over sixty museum collections as well as numerous corporate collections and private collections throughout the world, including Smithsonian Institution, Albuquerque Fine Arts Museum, Denver Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, Autry Museum of the American West, Eiteljorg Museum, New Mexico Museum of Art, and Palm Springs Art Museum. His work has been featured in more than 120 solo exhibitions, including Billy Schenck: Schenck’s Utah: A Land Less Traveled in 2022 at Modern West Fine Art in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Billy Schenck: The Myth of the West in 2017 at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center in Pueblo, Colorado. Among the hundreds of group shows in which Schenck has been included are the five-year tour of Andy Warhol: Cowboys and Indians/Billy Schenck: Myth of the West, originating at the Briscoe Western Art Museum in 2018, and the three-year tour of Southwest Rising: Contemporary Art and the Legacy of Elaine Horwitch, originating at Tucson Museum of Art in 2020. His work was also featured in the Denver Art Museum’s Western Horizons (2011), the Utah Museum of Fine Art’s Bierstadt to Warhol: American Indians in the West (2013), and Tucson Museum of Art’s Divergence of Legacy: Art of the American West in the 21st Century (2025).
