Jeffie Brewer
Jeffie Brewer was born in Jacksonville, Texas, and grew up in Palestine, doodling his way (mostly begrudgingly) through school in Elkhart. The son of eccentric junkyard owners, he learned early to spot beauty in the ordinary, pick up oddball industrial skills, and turn a knack for drawing into a lifelong pursuit.
Jeffie holds an MFA in sculpture and metals, an MA in sculpture and painting, and a BFA in drawing, printmaking, and jewelry. From 1998 to 2019, he taught everything from sculpture to expressive drawing, but he’s best known today for his big, colorful, joy-filled animal sculptures that pop up in public spaces across the U.S. and beyond — works that invite people to pause, play, and smile.
When not in the studio, Jeffie eats, thinks about golf, hangs out with his wife Angie (who he credits with saving him from impending doom), and obsesses over dogs, clouds, fresh figs, small violent birds, wildflowers, and exactly how fast time flies.
We are given a brief amount of time together. As an artist, I consider it a gift to be able to share my vision and experience. Sometimes it’s serious, sometimes it’s thoughtful and a lot of the time it’s just silly. The shared experience of existing, living, loving, thinking... seeing beauty, knowing fear, feeling passion, and just being is further magnified through art - creating, discussing, collaborating, learning and teaching. I have been privileged to have great mentors, teachers and friends to continue to share this with viewers is fantastic. The world can be a very dark place and sometimes it needs a little sunshine.
