Michael Magrin

Born and raised in New York, Michael Magrin moved to Colorado in 2001, drawn westward by the expansive skies and sweeping light of the Front Range. It’s here that he found his footing as a painter, pursuing a deep visual and emotional connection with the western landscape. His work reflects a quiet reverence for place—specifically the vast sky—and evokes a sense of calm, timelessness, and spiritual presence.

Michael’s early work emphasized strong compositions and simplified value structures within a square format. These high-key, muted color palettes laid the foundation for a visual language rooted in restraint and design. Over time, his focus has shifted toward a more nuanced exploration of color—how we perceive it in nature, and how it shapes our emotional response to a place. Today, his paintings aim to express the landscape through a balance of light, atmosphere, and form, using color as the connective thread between feeling and observation.

Magrin draws inspiration from the natural world, from his faith, and from painters of the past who saw landscape not merely as subject, but as story, memory, and metaphor. “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1) This verse remains at the heart of his artistic pursuit.

His work has been featured in Western Art Collector and The Artist’s Magazine, and is represented by Insight Gallery (Fredericksburg, TX), Broadmoor Gallery (Colorado Springs, CO), and Abend Gallery (Denver, CO). He has participated in numerous juried exhibitions, including the Young Guns of the Coors Western Art Show and Sale, where his contemporary approach to the western sky continues to resonate with collectors and curators alike.
