Stephanie Hartshorn

Stephanie Hartshorn is a fifth-generation Coloradan and award-winning oil painter known for her architectural portraits of the American West. Trained and practiced as an architect, she brings a designer’s eye to the canvas—balancing structure and looseness, rhythm and restraint. Her work captures barns, power lines, weathered facades, cloudbanks, carnival rides—everyday subjects that carry the layered history of a place still in motion.

“Knowing the history of this landscape and how generations of my family are woven throughout always figures into my work. My desire is to express a deep connection to the land and community that shaped our present way of life here in the West.”

Rather than idealize or romanticize the region, Hartshorn paints what she calls portraits of the West—deeply observed, story-driven works that reflect the beauty of a changing, aging landscape. With a contemporary approach to form and mark-making, she blends representational realism with abstraction to create pieces that feel both familiar and fresh.

Hartshorn is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society. Her work has appeared in Western Art & Architecture, Southwest Art, Cowboys & Indians, Western Art Collector, and other national publications. In 2024, she was awarded Best of Show (2-D) at the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale. She lives and works in Denver, Colorado.
