Born in Calgary, Alberta, wildlife sculptor Tim Cherry grew up in Nelson, a town located among the rugged Canadian Rockies in southeastern British Columbia, where he developed a love of wildlife and the outdoors. Exploring many miles on horseback in the remote northern areas of British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. His experiences and interactions with wildlife as an outdoor enthusiast and taxidermist will influence his work for a lifetime.
At age 19 taxidermist Forest Hart, welcomed him to his studio in Hampden, Maine. As a taxidermy student, Cherry’s hand and mind became skilled in modeling animals’ musculature. Cherry accompanied Hart to a New York foundry, experiencing the fascinating and magical process of fine art bronze for the first time.
In 1988, Cherry worked in the studios of Fritz White, Dan Ostermiller, and the foundry in Loveland, Colorado, he began to learn the skills necessary for the sculptural process. White encouraged Cherry to create stone carvings, while carving alabaster, Tim found the shapes and mass of the animals that were to become his life’s work.
Experimenting with graceful, lines and forms. Cherry’s unique style, so immediately recognizable, is an expression of each animal’s personality, movement, and behavior.
