William Matthews was born in 1949 in New York City. He grew up in the Bay Area. He is most well known for his portrayal of the working cowboys from the American West. The 2007 monograph, William Matthews: Working the West, is devoted to this subject and a theme the artist continues to pursue to this day.

William Matthews watercolors are part of numerous private and public collections including; Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum, Los Angeles; Booth Western Art Museum, Cartersville, Georgia; Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Museum, Cody, Wyoming; Denver Art Museum; Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, Indiana; Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma; Joslyn Museum, Omaha, Nebraska; National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Phoenix Art Museum, and the Tucson Museum.
