While traveling the Cowboy world, I noticed that no matter what part of the country I was in, cattle loved shade. And none more so than here in South Texas where I live. This impressive longhorn, with a spread nearing 100 inches, was seeking respite from our brutal sun and humidity. The shade also affords him a protective measure from the constant harassment of biting insects that are instinctively drawn to cattle. I chose to paint on a copper panel because I like the way that it reflects light back through the painting and warms up the subject matter. And it helped me to project to the viewer the intensity of experiencing this majestic animal walking towards you.
Over one hundred volunteers staff the Coors Art Gallery during the Stock Show and special events such as the Red Carpet Reception. Volunteers come from across the front range, drawn by their love for the art show as well as their dedication to raising funds for the National Western Scholarship Trust, to which the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale is the largest contributor.
