Originally from Kansas City, Anita first studied art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum when she was six years old. Anita has paintings in her personal art collection from her mother and her maternal grandmother who were both accomplished artists. Anita paints from her Castle Pines studio where she has plenty of animal and landscape inspiration right outside her door.

Blending modern insight with old world training and an exceptional sense of color, Anita enjoys painting a variety of subject matter. Anita trained for three years in the Russian school of painting with Don Sahli who was the last protege of Sergei Bongart, who taught in the tradition of the Russian Impressionists. Anita spent two years at the Art Student League of Denver with Jay Moore and Kim Mackey. Anita also spent a year studying classical portraiture with LV Davis at the Boulder Academy of Fine Art. Davis trained for 12 years with Clive Martindale who was John Singer Sargent’s assistant for the last 19 years of his life.

Anita’s work has been featured in articles numerous times in Southwest Art magazine including “Artist to Watch” in 2001 and in American Art Collector, Western Art Collector, Art of the West and Vail Art Magazine.

Anita is a Founding Emeritus signature member of Plein Air Artists Colorado and a signature member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painter’s Society and the Outdoor Painters Society.

“I favor a painterly approach in my work, in which a recognizable form is achieved, while at the same time the paint itself is celebrated and brushstrokes are not only visible but intrinsic to the success of the piece."

Since 1983, the National Western Scholarship Trust has been a beacon of hope for students pursuing careers in agriculture, rural medicine, and veterinary science. With the establishment of the Trust, a commitment was made to invest in the future of these vital fields by providing financial support to dedicated students. Today, the Trust proudly awards 120 scholarships annually, with individual awards ranging from $2,500 to $15,000. The goal of my art is to engage viewers through multiple sensory outlets, primarily visual and tactile. The saturated colors are playful, inviting and warm. The palette, along with the heavy texture, encourages a closer look and even a touch. My body of work is heavily influenced by my heritage and upbringing in both the city and on a ranch in Durango, Colorado. The paintings tell a story that reflects American history, especially in the West. Every piece starts with sculpting a landscape or image onto canvas with lightweight paste. Then, multiple acrylic color washes are applied to the layers and fine details are painted in. Paintings are completed with either a high gloss resin or varnished with a matte finish. The pieces are sculptures on canvas with the depth adding structure and interest. My work continues to grow and change in both the size and subject matter, always with a western nod and appreciation for my native Colorado upbringing.
