Michael Magrin
Since moving to Colorado from New York in 2001, I have sought to capture the elements that are ubiquitous to the western landscape through oil painting with an emphasis on the sky. I am interested in how we visually and emotionally experience the landscape. My paintings reflect a nostalgia of place and render a feeling of peace while trying not to sacrifice these greater truths for lesser details. Mindful of a contemporary expression, my earlier work focused on the elements of composition and value all within a square format. Often rendered with a muted high-key palette, I emphasized big shapes within a clear value plan. This allowed me to suggest the subtle colors and textures of each surface. As of late, I’m exploring the visual perception of color as it relates to the landscape. This next step in my artwork represents a new time of growth. I’m motivated by the idea that through using the language of color; alongside composition and value, I can find a more nuanced way to express the landscape. “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim his handiwork.” – Psalm 19:1
