Susan was born in Colorado. She was raised in both Colorado and in Southern California. She grew up with horses; rode throughout her childhood, competed in Western disciplines, and worked on ranches. She began endurance racing in the late 1990s. By 2003 she made the USA Equestrian Team and competed in the Pan American
